History and Winemaking Tradition
The history of winemaking in La Geria dates back to the 18th century when farmers adapted to the island’s harsh volcanic conditions following the massive eruptions of Timanfaya (1730-1736). Instead of abandoning the land, they developed a unique method of cultivation by digging conical pits into the volcanic ash (lapilli) to reach the fertile soil beneath. Each vine is planted individually and surrounded by a semi-circular stone wall (zocos) to protect it from strong winds. This innovative technique not only conserves moisture but also gives the vineyards their distinctive lunar-like appearance.
